Thai Kratom

Thai Kratom is one of the most famous Kratom cultivars. It was challenging to find true Thai Kratom for many years due to kratom’s legal issues in Thailand. However, Kratom prohibition in Thailand has ended, and this fantastic strain has made it into Mainstream Western culture, and for good reason. This blog will offer more information about Thai Kratom, its effects, history, and more.

What Is Kratom?

Kratom, or Mitragyna Speciosa, is an evergreen tree in the coffee family that is native to Southeast Asia. This tree can grow at heights up to 80 feet tall, and its leaves have been in use in traditional medicine practices for centuries. Laborers in Southeast Asia have traditionally chewed on raw Kratom leaves to relieve pain and boost energy levels. Today, Kratom is used for similar reasons; Kratom acts as an opiate (although it is not!) in the body, and is used to relieve pain, increase energy, reduce anxiety and depression, and more. While traditional uses often used fresh leaves, today’s Kratom is most often dried and powdered for ease of dosage.

What Is Thai Kratom?

Like most Kratom strains, Thai Kratom is named for where it comes from. Hence, Thai Kratom is native to Thailand’s lush, evergreen rainforests. However, this particular strain has its own story. This strain was originally found in Thailand, yes. But Kratom was illegal in Thailand for over 70 years, and this strain had to move to stay alive. During the Kratom prohibition in Thailand, Thai Kratom trees were taken to Indonesia. Even today, Indonesia is still the top producer of this strain. Though today’s Thai Kratom is often produced in Indonesia, the strain itself still hails from Thailand’s rich rainforests.

Thai Kratom vs Maeng Da

If you know anything about Kratom, you likely know about the famous Maeng Da strain. This strain is native to Thailand, as well. However, these strains are not the same thing, and should not be confused. Thai Kratom is a naturally occurring Kratom strain native to Thailand. Maeng Da Kratom is a cultivar that was created through generations of careful grafting and was not a naturally occurring strain.

These two strains, while both popular choices among Kratom users, have their differences. Thai Kratom has been described as more mental – mood boosting, mental relaxation, etc. Whereas Maeng Da Kratom is known to be a pain-relieving powerhouse. Keep in mind that these experiences will vary for each person, therefore it may be beneficial to explore a range of Kratom strains to identify which give you the desired benefits.

Thailand Kratom Prohibition

We mentioned the Thailand Kratom prohibition above. The story goes like this: Thailand began taxing opium, and people started increasingly using Kratom instead, cutting into government profits. Kratom was made illegal in Thailand in 1943 with the passage of the Kratom Act. However, law enforcement for Kratom use was relaxed, and its use was still widespread. In the 1970s, the government added Kratom to the list of prohibited narcotics. Classified as a narcotic, the real crackdown on Kratom in Thailand began. Not only was it illegal to sell or possess Kratom, but it was also illegal to have a Kratom tree on your property. Private properties were searched, and Kratom trees were removed throughout the country.

Fast forward to 2021, and Kratom is removed from the narcotics list. In 2022, the Kratom Plant Act B.E. 2565 was passed, establishing the framework for the manufacturing and sale of Kratom in Thailand. However, because there are still significant roadblocks in place for Thai growers (e.g. all kratom export licenses require the approval of the secretary-general of Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board), it’s likely that Indonesia will remain the dominant Thai kratom exporter for the foreseeable future.

Thai Kratom Effects

Kratom’s effects are very dependent on which color you choose. Kratom comes in three main colors: white, green, and red. When a Kratom tree is very young, the veins on the leaves appear white. Immature Kratom trees produce white Kratom. As the tree matures, the veins of the leaves take on a reddish hue. Kratom trees at this mid-life stage produce red Kratom. And as the trees reach full maturity, the leaf veins turn green; the source of green Kratom.

  • White Thai — One of the most energy-boosting strains available. White Thai promotes heightened focus and mental stimulation.
  • Red Thai — Red Thai is your go-to relaxation strain. Users have reported this red to be better for mental relaxation than for relief of physical discomfort.
  • Green Thai — Green Thai is the perfect balance between energy and relaxation. It actually offers more energy than most green strains but with added mental clarity.
